A new day....coffee on the lenai....adventure day here we come!
But first...a Lucy update! The pups waiting for breakfast......Lucy and Gracie....best buds!
Here's our ride for the trip! This Jeep has been around!
Massive lava flows..
Had to make a stop at the USA southern most bakery..Gold Mine!
I have never tried Ebu flavored ice-cream....purple yam!!! Yup! Yam and it was yummy!!
Next stop Punaluu Black Sand Beach.
We always take a feet in the sand pic to show the colour.... this one looks like my legs were put on backwards!
The black sand comes from eroded volcanic basalt that has weathered over time.
Just a short drive is the southernmost point in the United States near Naalehu.
There are quite a few people fishing, some trying to bring in the big tuna but we didn't see anyone catch anything. We did see a few families actually living in their vehicles in makeshift compounds...
The colours are amazing here!
And timing is everything, caught this guy cliff jumping!
Green Sand Beach. Locals will load you into the back of a pickup truck like cattle for the over 2.7 mile drive each way for $20 a head.....standing all the way ....banging around holding on for dear life!!!
Now for the reason we rented a jeep.....and a disclaimer....I am a 🐔 amongst other things....so...let's say I spent much time with my eyes closed and fingers in my ears wishing I was not in the back seat of a jeep in the maze of rugged lava rock and red sand roads envisioning breaking down or getting so lost in the maze we need help getting out! But our expert driver Joe got us there.
These are the dirt tracks....I never thought of getting pictures from my featal position in the backseat...so here are other traveller's pics!
And almost an hour later we arrived...
After a quick beer and sandwich, George and I ventured down the stairs and the steep descent to the beach....
The sand at Papakōlea Beach in Hawaii is green because it contains olivine, a mineral that's denser than the volcanic ash that surrounds it.
Joe and Marianne at the top!
And what comes down must come back up! One of the cattle trucks was getting ready to leave so a few of us thought we would follow them out.....the larger than life local lady (if you could call her a lady....that might be stretching it a little) yelled out the truck at us that if we were going to follow we better pay up! NOT! And off we all went leaving them in the dust! We made it out in about 40 minutes.... about the same time as the cattle truck!
Still a ways to go but there's an end in sight!!!
Beer break to celebrate the safe return to the main road!
She's a little dusty but no worse for the wear!
