March 4 - Sand mixed with lava

Today was planned to be a chill day, not too much driving. Heading south for a bit.

Just randomly stopped at this church, looked interesting.

Saint Benedict’s Catholic Church is a parish of the Roman Catholic Church, nicknamed simply “The Painted Church.” It was built between 1899 and 1902 under the direction of the Belgian Catholic missionary Father John Velghe, who painted frescoes along the interior ceiling and walls to bring life to Holy Scripture during a time when many people could not read or write. Beautiful.... and I loved the sign in the bathroom....Cleanliness is next to Godliness !

Next stop was Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park located at Hōnaunau Bay in South Kona immerses you in Hawaiian culture. This 180-acre national historic park was once the home of royal grounds and a place of refuge for ancient Hawaiian lawbreakers.

Kapu, or sacred laws, were of utmost importance to Hawaiian culture and the breaking of kapu had its consequences, including death. If one were to break kapu, their only chance for survival was to evade his pursuers and make it to a puʻuhonua, or a sacred place of refuge. Once there, a ceremony of absolution would take place and the one who broke kapu would be able to return to society.
George's new friends!

The vegetation here is very interesting for sure!

Off to Two Step beach. This is the view of the Park from the beach.

Marianne asked why it's called Two Step Beach.....quite simply that there are 2 steps on the lava rock into the snorkel beach....a super busy snorkel beach but you have to be so careful as it gets deep instantly and only one safe access point. We have snorkeled here before but today is not a water day.

Tummies growling we found a great little restaurant for Taco Tuesday...great food, no liquor license but you can just bring your own booze..... which we just happened to have.

And together with the chickens.....cat and dogs...it was our kinda place.

We have been watching the Kilauea volcano as we knew she had finished Episode 11 about a week ago. I signed up for the volcano alerts but out best help came from Philip Waller of Lava Light Galleries in Waikoloa. Friends from Vernon know the gallery owners and we had met CJ a few times on the island. We stopped to say hi the other day but CJ was not in but Philip took us under his wing. He gave us his card, filled us in on the best place to view and also gave us the crucial info of she seems to blow about every Tuesdsy at sunset and will go for about 12 hours....

And if she didn't do just that! We had planned to leave at 2 am on Wednesday morning to see if we could catch her on our way to Hilo....but we received the text from Philip that she was waking up!!!

A quick drive back to the condo....warm clothes packed...adrenaline flowing and we were off!

The closer we got to her the darker the skies got and we hit some rain... and a rainbow!

We waited it put a bit on the Jeep until the rain stopped as we knew we had time before sunset... about a 1 1/2 km walk to the viewing area.

When we arrived it was actually hard to see her...darn rain and vog......

Then she appeared in all her glory!

Kilauea Volcano!

We did it! We came, we saw...once in a lifetime experience for us!

Into Hilo to the Hilo Towne Tavern with some great music, a cocktail or two and great pub food!  This group of guys has been performing every Tuesday night for 19 years!

And there were these couple of friends who danced the night away, Hawaiian style!

And timing is everything....by the next morning.... her fury subsided....maybe until next Tuesday....

Received an amazing picture from Philip taken by CJ.... this is what an amazinging expensive camera can do.
