So this road runs between Mona Kea and Mona Loa...another active volcano. If Mona Loa blows.... they say it will significantly change the island and the life on it.
In one section you are basically driving through a lava field.
First stop was Rainbow Falls....pretty sleepy as not any significant rainfall lately, but still nice.
And Banyon trees everywhere....they are a mass of branches, so intertwined that you cannot see where one starts and one ends.
Downtown Hilo is quite beautiful, located on the ocean, surrounded by an old downtown area and trees and gardens.
We thought this was a man walking a goat! No goat...just a real unusual coloured dog...
And where there is water we always see someone playing in it... and a couple turtles along the way.
King Kamehameha The Great was instrumental in colonizing the Hawaiian Islands....as well as populating them....30 wives and 17 male children and 18 female...
Hunger sent us to a local Fish and Chip Bar....we need to remember to share some of these meals....lots and lots of fish..
Now for the reason we ventured to the East side of the island was to go to Uncle Robert's Awa Farmers Market. Apparently Wednesday from 5 to 9 is the place to be.
After paying $10 each and walking into a virtually empty place....we questioned our decision. This was the music that was playing....
You can bring your own drinks in and come and go as you please. One of the young guys said there was a nice mile and a half trail to the ocean....it was actually only a quarter of a mile and so glad we walked it.
We saw Uncle Robert's memorial along the way.
And there were several more scattered on the lava fields.
And after a very short walk, this was the view...
And as we have seen in other places, Lava Dwellers who have taken up a portion on the lava fields and make it their own. Solar panels, rain barrels, shelter and voila! A home!
Now back to check out the Market to see if anything has changed. By the time we returned ......things were happening.
There was a large NO DOGS sign..... but I think that only refers to visitors... This BIG BOY was a real mooch... and he had the size to back himself up! A Big Gentle Giant!
The longer we stayed the more alive it became! We all had a great time!
Do you think this young guy working in a Food booth looks like a local Hawaiian??
From earthy to all blinged out! A little bit of everything here.
It was all very well done. Everyone super friendly, sampled a bit of food...had a few very delicious Margaritas and called it a night. Late night after over a 2 hour drive, safely home to enjoy another wonderful Island day!
Aloha!
